Now is the time to add the “Color of the Year” into your home décor

Every year the major paint companies and the Color Institute decree a color of the year.  They all have their own prediction on what that perfect color for the coming year will be, but if you compare the color predictions of Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, and Pantone you will see that the cool gray tones of the past ten years are slowly being replaced with an emphasis on earthy tones and natural materials making it the perfect time to add woven grasses and natural fibers such as silk or silk look-alikes creating a cozy casual environment.  This change will make your home feel calm and perhaps balance some of the turmoil of the outside world.

Benjamin Moore chose Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, a nuanced hue which they describe on their website as "a delicate mix of heathered plum and velvety brown." This color offers a blend of warmth and sophistication, bringing a soothing familiarity to various design settings.  There are strong pink undertones in this hue, so using this in your bedroom would create a sense of calm to help you create an inviting sleep environment.

Sherwin Williams chose Grounded SW 6089 which definitely has a more earthy vibe.  This warm brown has just the right depth of color to be used as an accent, but to really create a meditative space, paint all the walls in this tone, then do the ceiling in a lighter version of this shade such as Dusted Truffle SW 9083.  I’m not a fan of the white ceiling when using a strong neutral like this one.  It ruins the overall effort of taking a bold step and weakens the impact of the deep wall color.

Pantone went all in combining a beautiful warm brown with a delicious name 17-1230 Mocha Mousse

The name itself evokes a creamy smooth texture and might be best paired with a softer style of shade such as a relaxed Roman Shade made from a sheer fabric that drapes like the swirls on the top of a delicious mousse!  This is where play comes into design.  Don’t be afraid to have a bit of fun decorating your space to set the mood for enjoying this change in your home.
